A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
